We live in an extraordinary natural world, which I have recently explored in all its colourful rhythms and abstractions. There are at least three big, bold and beautiful paintings along these themes, but I have returned to tradition in many of my very latest, reflecting the splendour of trees and grasses, grazing cattle and magnificent birds.
As we advanced into high summer in Australia, the gumtrees shed their bark (or as I see it, their garments). In January, the trees were splendidly dressed in new garments, showing colours of the most glorious range – orange, and beige, and greys and greens – especially after rain. Some even showed skin colours as though they stood proudly naked before us – shiny and sinewy.
It is such a pleasure to share this exhibition with Meg and her brilliant floral portraits that speak of beauty at every turn. It has also been my joy to paint the spirit of nature for over fifty years, and I will continue to do so, whilst nurturing other artists in lessons each Monday in May to raise funds for Waukivory Hall. Meg Tulk
Meg grew up in Sydney and still resides there part time. Much of her inspiration comes from her second home that she shares with her husband Gary in Waukivory, Gloucester. The changing seasons and impact of nature on the landscape are evident in her stylistic interpretation of nature’s beauty. Her bold use of vibrant colour and white outlining is the dominating element in her paintings. Acrylic paint is used in the traditional method and as a watercolour technique to create a unique bleed of one colour to the next. The slightly abstract nature of her work is achieved through the use of non traditional colours, emphasis on the beauty found in shapes and the technique of negative painting. All paintings are bright , cheerful and uplifting. Most paintings are shadow boxed framed with timber that has been milled from the family farm.
