This exhibition invites you to slow down, to take your time in front of each art work. Look closer. At everything in it. What do you see? What do you remember? What do you imagine? What the art work means is what it means for you.
Greg Salter

Greg Salter grew up in Largs in the Hunter Valley and now lives in Telarah. Born in 1974, he has been fascinated by animals for as long as he can remember. Growing up, he was constantly drawing them, and if there was an animal documentary on TV, he would be watching it.
It was while studying at TAFE in Newcastle that Greg was introduced to sculpture. Having always worked with tools, the hands-on nature of sculpture came far more naturally to him than the books he struggled with in high school. Creating animals from whatever materials he can get his hands on became both a passion and a process of discovery.
When I started sculpting animals, I loved studying their shape and form. I’ll begin with an idea and a few reference images, but it’s really the existing shapes in the materials that guide me. I manipulate and assemble them until the sculpture seems to come to life. Often it feels like the piece forms in front of me as I work — sometimes even surprising me as I build.
