The Indigenous Astronomy Star Wheel is the result of collaboration between Indigenous Elder Gapingaru Naputa of the Woorabinda Birregubba People and non-Indigenous astronomer Gordon Patston. It was first published to celebrate NAIDOC Week in 1996. (available to purchase from Gloucester Gallery and MidTown Gallery $40)
Features
• A map of the night sky featuring Sky Figures as perceived by a range of Indigenous Nations across Australia. The wheel turns to be set at any time or date.
• Recordings of Indigenous Knowledges for each month told by Gapingaru Naputa
• Text of the Indigenous stories for each month
• Glow in the dark to help night-time observation
24 and 26 June from sunset
Location will be near Gloucester Gallery
Gloucester Gallery and MidTown Gallery will be open while the stargazing is happening.
